Portland AC season sneaks up fast. Spending 15 minutes on a spring tune-up is the cheapest insurance you can buy against a 95-degree breakdown in July.
What you can do yourself
- Change your air filter — pick a fresh one for the warm months.
- Clear leaves, grass, and debris away from the outdoor condenser (give it at least two feet of clearance on all sides).
- Gently rinse the condenser fins with a garden hose on low pressure to remove pollen and dust.
- Test your thermostat by running the AC for 10 minutes — cold air should arrive within a couple minutes.
- Check that the condensate drain line isn't clogged or backing up.
What to leave to a pro
Refrigerant levels, electrical connections, capacitor health, blower motor amperage, and a full coil cleaning all benefit from a real tune-up. A professional spring service catches the small issues that turn into July emergencies.
